How often do they exist close enough in space and time for interaction? And if they do, can the known laws of physics realistically permit communication or interstellar travel? The investigation moves from: Existence. Coexistence. Interaction. The three questions are examined in sequence, then brought together into a cumulative case.

What You Will Find	A quantitative examination of: the possible abundance of technological civilizations. the effects of temporal overlap. the effects of spatial separation. the probability of nearby civilizations under the model. the energy required for interstellar travel. the limits imposed by relativity and the speed of light. the problems of detection and communication. and the uncertainty of motivation and expansion. The book uses probability, mathematics, astrophysics, and established physical principles to examine what these constraints mean when considered together.
